Home improvement

Home improvement is the remodeling, altering, renovating, repairing, restoring, or modernizing of any structure or space within a residential building. This includes, but is not limited to, the construction of a new home building, additions to such a building, fences, patios, boundary walls not necessary for the structural stability of a dwelling, and garages.

When deciding which projects to tackle, be sure to consider your own goals and skillset. It’s important to choose a project you’re comfortable with, as well as one that fits your budget and schedule. You may want to consult design or renovation experts before starting your project; they can help you avoid costly mistakes and plan a more functional space.

It’s also helpful to research which improvements provide the best return on investment. Keep in mind that buyer preferences vary by market, so focus on projects that will be popular with buyers where you live. Kitchen and bathroom upgrades are usually safe bets, as are finished basements and decks. However, a master suite can be a risky investment, as it may not appeal to all buyers.

When choosing a contractor for your project, be sure to get all estimates in writing before work begins. Look for a firm with a physical address, a valid MHIC license, and a clear and concise contract that includes the contractor’s name, address, MHIC number, and job description. Also, be wary of contractors who ask for payment upfront or require full payment before beginning the work.
