Home improvement is the renovation, remodeling, repairing, altering, converting or modernizing of any part of a dwelling or non-residential building. Home improvement also includes the installation of insulation, and extending or altering an existing structure to increase its capacity for use as a dwelling. However, it does not include additions to, or the conversion of, a commercial building into a residential building.
Homeowners have developed a renewed interest in the concept of home improvement. While the pandemic may have contributed to this phenomenon, it was not the only reason. According to a survey published by the National Association of Realtors, homeowners upgraded their homes for a variety of reasons. These included upgrading worn-out surfaces, finishes and materials (30%), increasing livability (29%), adding features and improving resale value (25%) and simply wanting a change (16%).
Aside from the more obvious monetary benefits, a well-executed home improvement project can make a homeowner feel more at ease and at home in their surroundings. For instance, a kitchen remodel can transform the way a family cooks and socializes. It can also add more storage space to keep counters uncluttered.
However, it is important to be cautious when choosing a contractor. It is recommended that homeowners take the time to research and choose contractors that are licensed, certified and insured. This way, they can rest assured that they will receive quality service and a fair price for the work being done. It is also advised that homeowners check business references and do a background check before hiring anyone to work on their home.
