What Is Spirituality?
Spirituality is an attitude and a way of living that seeks to discover the ultimate truth about life, and how to live it in harmony with the universe. It can be achieved through a variety of practices, including meditation, yoga and mindfulness.
RESOURCES
The main resources for spiritual practice are the mind and emotions. These can include: a sense of purpose and morality; a desire to learn, experience and adventure; a feeling of love for others; and a thirst for knowledge about the universe.
ACTIONS AND RITUALS
Many different types of spiritual practice involve rituals, or specific actions that are performed for a purpose. These are often accompanied by feelings of intensity and reverence.
SERVICE
Serving the community and helping people in need can be a form of spiritual practice. It may involve feeding the poor, social reform, translation of scriptures, and supporting online communities.
INTIMACY AND MEDITATION
The practice of meditation can help to develop and enhance one’s sensitivity to divine guidance, which in turn can improve one’s ability to respond effectively to difficult situations. It is also thought to reduce stress and depressive symptoms, and to increase immune response.
INNER RELATESIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS
Individuals who have developed a strong relationship with their inner self or with a higher power often experience a wide range of positive emotions, and they are less likely to experience negative ones. They are more tolerant of stress, depression, and anxiety, as well as more likely to report improved mental health. They also feel more in control of their lives and express greater empathy, compassion, generosity, optimism, and humility.
